Computing at Westminster
Lead: Adam Green
At Westminster Primary Academy we believe that Computing and the use of ICT is an integral part of the education of all children. We aim to give each pupil the opportunity to apply and develop their technological understanding and skills across a wide range of situations and tasks. Pupils are encouraged to develop a confident and safe approach to Computing and the use of ICT, with the understanding of the capabilities and flexibility of their resources. Children have access to fantastic ICT resources such as Chromebooks and Virtual Reality headsets. The provision of such resources has enabled children to grasp a greater understanding of the technological world that we now live in.
There are three core strands to the curriculum:
Computer Science: The principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.
Information Technology: How to create programs, systems and a range of content.
Digital Literacy: Children are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and communication technology.
At Westminster Primary Academy we understand the importance of technology and how it has become an integral part of young people lives. Despite the obvious benefits of technology we are aware of the dangers that technology and particularly the internet can pose. As a result it is our duty to educate children on internet safety and make internet safety an integral part of our safeguarding and child protection measures. The school celebrates Safer Internet Day (Tuesday 6th February 2024) and each year group is educated on internet safety as part of the computing and PSHE curriculum.
