PE at Westminster

Lead: Debbie Hume

Physical Education at Westminster Primary Academy develops a wide range of important values such as children’s physical, social, interpersonal and emotional skills. Children learn to be creative, have fun and develop important attributes such as team work, respect and competitiveness. Our curriculum aims to provide an equal opportunity of learning experiences in games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor education. Children will be encouraged to take on different roles and enjoy physical activity as performers, spectators and referees/umpires/officials.

Reception

In the Foundation Stage children have access to a wide range of physical activity provision throughout the indoor and outdoor classroom as well as taking part in set PE sessions. During this provision children will learn to negotiate space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others. They will be able to demonstrate strength, balance and coordination when playing and be able to move energetically, such as running, jumping, dancing, hopping, skipping and climbing.

KS1

In Key Stage 1 children build on their early experiences and should develop fundamental movement skills and become increasingly competent and confident in their physical ability. Children will be taught to master basic movement skills, develop balance, agility and coordination through a broad range of activities. They will begin to participate in team games and work cooperatively with others, develop tactics for attacking and defending and be able to engage in competition both with themselves and others.

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 children should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. It is important for the children in Key Stage 2 to develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Healthy Lifestyles

At Westminster Primary Academy we pride ourselves in promoting a  positive attitude towards a healthy and active lifestyle. This is achieved by children having access to a wide range of extra curricular clubs which accommodate a wide variety of interests both during and after school. Children also have the opportunity to attend a cooking club, which teaches children how to prepare and cook healthy snacks and meals.
